Need a fun, beautiful gift in a hurry? I designed this one a few years ago and it is my go-to when I need a quick gift. It is designed for a layer cake, but you can just as easily make it with a charm pack for a lovely baby gift! This is the first quilt in my new Weekender series, which can be made in a day or two. This makes a 72-inch square quilt!
Ready to get started?
You will need:
1 Layer Cake or 34 10″ squares
2.5 yards background fabric
2/3 yard binding
4.5 yards backing fabric
batting
Sewing machine, pins, thread, and scissors or rotary cutter and mat
Choose 8 Layer Cake squares and trim to 9.5 inches (this is a good place to use larger prints!)
Choose 26 Layer Cake squares to use in half square triangles. Set the rest of your Layer Cake aside for another project.
Cut your background fabric into (8) 9.5-inch squares and (22) 10-inch squares.
Let’s make some half square triangles (‘hst’ from here on)! Draw a line diagonally on the back of (22) 10-inch background squares. Layer one with a 10-inch print square, right sides together, and sew along each side of the drawn line with a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Cut along the drawn diagonal lines to yield 2 hst. Repeat with 21 more of your 10-inch squares to make a total of 44 print/background hst. Trim to 9.5 inches square.
Draw a line diagonally on the back of (2) 10-inch print squares. Layer one with another 10-inch square, right sides together, and sew along each side of the diagonal line using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Cut along the drawn diagonal lines to yield 4 print/print hst. Trim to 9.5 inches square.
Need some fabric inspiration? Here is my latest one! I used Fresh Fig Favorites by Fig Tree, but this pattern looks great in any fabric!
Now let’s start assembling our quilt top. Assemble (2) 9.5″ background squares, (2) 9.5″ print squares, (1) print/print hst, and (11) print/background hst into one quadrant as shown below. Make four quadrants.
Now assemble the top by rotating the quadrants to make the design shown below:
Quilt and bind as desired! I’m super busy sewing up some other fun stuff, so I’ll be sending mine to Gina Tell to quilt and bind. You can find her here: http://www.thread-graffiti.com

This is such a cute pattern with directions so easy to understand. I’m inspired to try it. I get afraid to start quilts because it takes me a long time to finish them. After reading this, I feel like even I could do it in a weekend.

You can do it Pearlie! I’d love to see yours when you finish ♥
